I download it as needed through Tinker (a GFWL digital download that I grabbed ages ago, also a small game) and that seems to work. The only problem I've encountered re: disc-based GFWL is downloading my profile - probably because my profile is so big, the download times out or fills up my active memory or something stupid. I just recently did Fallout 3 (PC) from a GFWL disc and had no issues at all. Which really sucks because all we want is the dang achievements and we can't do that without the system that they decided to shut down and remove from the game!

Being that GFWL is no longer really a thing, you can't update things that they've ruled obsolete.

I'm assuming that the reason it's doing this, is because when you download it through steam, you are getting the very last possible update that could have ever came out for the game, but when you install it from a disc, then you are required to update it. I really hope this does something as i have no other ideas at the moment.

After these are installed, i would just load up fallout 3 and see if you can clicked the button then. This should download the client, the marketplace, as well as the sign in assistant and i believe that the sign in assistant is what you need. If you're the type of person who is really 'virus paranoid' and don't trust me giving you a direct link to a download, then just search 'GFWL update' on google and hit the first link.
